Castle of Marostica
Two connected fortifications dominate the hilltop town of Marostica, linked by a remarkable wall and framing the famous Chess Square below.

History
The fortifications developed as part of the medieval defensive network protecting the Veneto region. The Lower Castle once functioned as a toll booth, evidence of its role in controlling trade routes through the valley. The wall system evolved to encompass and protect the growing settlement.

The Upper and Lower Castles display characteristic medieval military architecture. The connecting wall forms one of the region’s most impressive defensive structures. Within the walls lies the Piazza, known for its Chess Square. Opposite the Lower Castle stands the Doglione, also called Rocca di Mezzo, the former toll structure now integrated into the town’s architectural heritage.
Cultural significance
Every two years, the Chess Square hosts a celebrated living chess match in period costume, transforming the piazza into a stage for medieval pageantry. This biennial event has become central to Marostica’s identity, drawing visitors to witness history re-enacted on the historic chessboard.
