Villa Arconati
An eighteenth-century Baroque villa in the Groane Park near Milan, now home to a cultural foundation dedicated to architecture and design.
At a glance
Villa Arconati stands within the Groane Park, surrounded by approximately 200 hectares of woodland, moorland and cultivated fields. The main approach follows the Via dei Leoni, a tree-lined pathway lined with white hornbeams that begins at the state road between Bollate and Garbagnate, marked by feline statues and obelisks.
History
Built as a villa of leisure in the seventeenth century, the property evolved over time to become a landmark of Baroque architecture in Lombardy. In 1983, the villa became the institutional seat of the Augusto Rancilio Foundation (FAR), a non-profit organisation established in memory of the architect Augusto Rancilio, who died at age 26. The foundation now manages the site while advancing its dual mission of cultural preservation and professional development.
What you see
The villa exemplifies eighteenth-century Lombard Baroque design. It occupies a vertex of a large quadrangular garden adjacent to the courtyards and church of the historic agricultural village of Castellazzo. The architectural composition integrates the main residence with the surrounding landscape, creating a coherent ensemble that reflects the ambitions of its original patrons.
Cultural significance
Villa Arconati holds status as a national monument and represents a key example of Baroque villa architecture in Lombardy. Through the Augusto Rancilio Foundation, it continues to serve as a centre for study and research in architecture, design and urban planning, with particular focus on young professionals and their integration into the creative industries.
