Stabilimento Regina, Montecatini Terme

The Regina baths close Montecatini’s spa park with a travertine portico — Giovannozzi’s 1920s answer to the Tettuccio next door, neo-Renaissance rather than Liberty, and no less grand.

At a glance

The Stabilimento Regina stands on a low rise in Montecatini’s spa park, a short walk from the Tettuccio. The architect Ugo Giovannozzi — who rebuilt the Tettuccio in the same years — gave it a grand travertine front with a full-arched colonnaded portico, in a neo-Renaissance manner. Its great hall, once laid out for drinking the waters, now serves conferences and events.

Key facts

  • Rebuilt: 1923–1927, by Ugo Giovannozzi
  • Style: neo-Renaissance (not Liberty)
  • Material: travertine, with a full-arched colonnaded portico
  • In front: the Heron and the Frog fountain (1925) by Raffaello Romanelli
  • Status: no longer a thermal establishment; hosts conferences and events

History

Montecatini’s great rebuilding of the 1920s gave the spa a suite of monumental new baths. The Regina, like the neighbouring Tettuccio, was the work of the architect Ugo Giovannozzi, who chose a grand neo-Renaissance language in travertine rather than the Liberty of the previous generation.

The building’s hall was laid out for taking the waters, with zones for distribution, seating and refreshment. In front of it Raffaello Romanelli set the fountain of the Heron and the Frog in 1925. The Regina no longer dispenses cures and is used today for conferences and events.

What you see

A long travertine front with a colonnaded portico of full arches, raised on its low hill above the park. The manner is sober and classical, a deliberate contrast to the Liberty exuberance elsewhere in Montecatini.

The Romanelli fountain stands before the entrance, and the building is set among the trees of the spa park.

Practical information

  • Now a conference and events venue; not a working spa
  • The travertine portico and the Romanelli fountain are the highlights
  • In the spa park, near the Tettuccio
