Grand Hotel Palazzo della Fonte
Garibaldi Burba’s Palazzo della Fonte opened in 1913 above the springs of Fiuggi, a Liberty grand hotel built for the European cure-takers who made the town fashionable. It is still a luxury hotel.
At a glance
The Grand Hotel Palazzo della Fonte is the largest of Fiuggi’s Belle Époque hotels, set on the hillside above Fiuggi Fonte with a view over the spa town. The architect Garibaldi Burba designed it in Liberty style, with painted and fresco decoration by Silvio Galimberti; it was inaugurated in 1913 and has operated as a luxury hotel, with interruptions, ever since.

History
When Fiuggi reinvented itself as a spa in the early twentieth century, it needed a hotel grand enough to hold a European clientele. Garibaldi Burba — the architect who also designed the town’s original Liberty thermal building — drew the Palazzo della Fonte on the slope above the springs.
Inaugurated in 1913, the hotel set the standard for the resort: a long Liberty front, terraced gardens and decorative cycles by the painter Silvio Galimberti. It drew aristocrats, politicians and, later, film stars, and remained one of the most celebrated grand hotels of central Italy.
Burba’s original thermal building lower down was demolished between 1967 and 1969 and rebuilt by Luigi Moretti; the Palazzo della Fonte, by contrast, survives, restored and still in use as a five-star hotel.
What you see
A long Liberty façade stepped into the hillside, with terraces and gardens falling towards Fiuggi Fonte. The historic interiors keep painted and frescoed decoration of the 1910s.
The hotel is a working business; the building and gardens are best appreciated from the spa town below.
