The Alpine ‘Schloss Adler’ that a commando team storms in Where Eagles Dare (1968) is Hohenwerfen Fortress, the medieval castle on a crag above the Salzach valley south of Salzburg. Its cable-car approach and sheer rock setting gave the wartime thriller its impregnable Nazi stronghold; the fortress has guarded the valley for some nine hundred years.
