Rob Marshall’s Memoirs of a Geisha (2005) filmed among the temples of Kyoto, including the great wooden terrace of Kiyomizu-dera and the vermilion torii of Fushimi Inari. The thirteenth-century Buddhist temple, whose stage juts over the hillside on enormous timber pillars, gave the film its image of an older, ceremonial Japan.
