History
The building opened in December 1993 as a dedicated concert and events arena. Initially, it hosted both Bologna’s professional basketball teams, Fortitudo and Virtus. In 1999, Fortitudo relocated to the historic PalaDozza in central Bologna, leaving Virtus as the arena’s primary basketball tenant.
The venue’s identity strengthened considerably following a comprehensive restyling in summer 2008, which modernized its interior spaces and enhanced its technical capabilities.
What you see
The 2008 renovation replaced the original multicolored interior scheme (yellow, orange, gray, and purple) with Virtus’s corporate colors: white walls and seating, black stairs. A white parquet floor features transparent Vs and star motifs.
Key improvements include six video projection maxi-screens for advertising, replays, and scoreboards; a gallery-museum dedicated to Virtus history; and an underground corridor with black-and-white graphics connecting the changing rooms to the playing field.
Cultural significance
As a premier concert destination, Unipol Arena has hosted major international touring acts spanning rock, pop, and metal genres. From Paul McCartney and David Bowie to Metallica, Green Day, and Coldplay, the venue reflects contemporary music culture’s broad reach across decades.
The arena remains integral to Italian professional basketball, providing Virtus Bologna with a modern facility befitting the sport’s elite level.
