Galleria Torbandena Projects

A contemporary art gallery devoted to European and American historical avant-garde movements and international contemporary practice.

At a glance

Galleria Torbandena Projects represents a significant force in Trieste’s contemporary art landscape. The gallery champions experimental art across multiple continents and decades, from mid-twentieth-century innovation to present-day creation.

History

Founded in 1964, the gallery has been under the direction of Andy and Alessandro Rosada since 1977. Andy Rosada emerged from Milan’s Informale and Spazialismo movements, while Alessandro trained in Trieste, a city fundamental to Mitteleuropean culture. This complementary background shaped the gallery’s focus.

During the 1980s and 1990s, the Rosadas concentrated attention on Neo-Expressionist poetics of Austrian, Slavic, and German origin—a curatorial direction that reflected both directors’ cultural heritage and intellectual commitments.

What you see

The gallery occupies a contemporary exhibition space in central Trieste. Its layout accommodates a rotating program of artworks spanning painting, sculpture, and mixed media.

Cultural significance

Galleria Torbandena Projects bridges Italian and Central European artistic traditions. By prioritizing Neo-Expressionist and avant-garde work from Austria, Germany, and Slavic regions, the gallery reinforces Trieste’s historical role as a cultural crossroads. It remains an essential venue for understanding twentieth and twenty-first-century European art movements.
