Villa Lattes

An early 18th-century Venetian villa designed by Giorgio Massari, housing a museum dedicated to regional cultural heritage and educational programs.

At a glance

Villa Lattes stands as Giorgio Massari’s documented first work, built in 1715 for Paolo Tamagnino in the Treviso plain. The villa combines architectural refinement with contemporary art commissions. Today it operates as a museum offering exhibitions, educational visits, and workshops for schools.

History

Commissioned by Paolo Tamagnino, Villa Lattes was completed in 1715 under Massari’s direction. The precise date is documented through an altarpiece by Jacopo Amigoni installed in the villa’s chapel, inscribed with the date 4 July 1715—likely marking the painting’s placement in its marble frame.

This project launched Massari’s career as a major architect of Venetian patrician residences. His subsequent commissions included Palazzo Grassi in Venice, multiple villas in the Asolo region, and the redesign of significant structures across the Veneto.

What you see

The villa exemplifies early 18th-century Venetian architectural principles under Massari’s hand. Its chapel retains the original altarpiece by Jacopo Amigoni, a significant work of religious art from the period. The building’s proportions and spatial arrangement reflect the refined domestic taste of the Venetian patriciate.

Cultural significance

Villa Lattes marks the beginning of Giorgio Massari’s influential design career, which shaped patrician domestic architecture across the Veneto for decades. The villa’s survival and conversion to museum use preserve both architectural and artistic heritage from a transformative period in Venetian culture.
