Campiglia Marittima

A medieval town in the Maremma region shaped by Etruscan and Roman mining activity, with archaeological evidence spanning millennia.

At a glance

Campiglia Marittima is a town in the Province of Livorno whose identity has been rooted in mineral extraction since ancient times. The settlement’s strategic location in a resource-rich area attracted successive civilizations, from Etruscan miners to Roman workers to medieval inhabitants who built the town’s urban core.

History

The name Campiglia derives from the Latin campus, meaning “field.” First attested in written sources as Campillia in 1004, the town received its maritime designation—”of the Maremma”—in 1862.

Archaeological evidence reveals occupation long before the medieval period. Etruscans and Romans exploited the area’s abundant minerals, establishing workshops and mining operations at the foot of the village. Traces of an eighth- or ninth-century settlement of huts mark the transition to the medieval era, when the inhabited area took permanent shape.

Written sources confirm the urban settlement of Campillia from the eleventh century, though Pisan historical influence from the mid-twelfth century onward gave the community increased prominence in regional records.

What you see

The Church of the Madonna di Fucinaia stands at the village’s edge, marking the location of ancient Etruscan and Roman mining activity. The archaeological-mining park adjacent to the church preserves physical traces of this industrial heritage—smelting furnaces and mining wells that centuries of workers excavated in search of metals remain visible today.

Cultural significance

Campiglia Marittima embodies the intersection of economic activity and settlement patterns across multiple historical periods. The town’s survival and growth depended on its mineral wealth, a factor that attracted the Etruscans, sustained Roman enterprise, and continued to shape medieval settlement patterns.
