Vercelli

Capital of its province in eastern Piedmont, Vercelli earned the title “European rice capital” through centuries of agricultural innovation and commerce along the Sesia river.

At a glance

Vercelli is a historic city located on the right bank of the Sesia river in Piedmont’s eastern reaches. Its prominence as a commercial and agricultural center—particularly in the rice trade—shaped its identity and economy across Europe for generations.

History

According to local tradition, Vercelli was originally founded as Meropoli, named for its founder, and grew into a fortified settlement of considerable scale. The city extended across both banks of the Sesia, connected by three bridges. Medieval defenses included walls rising 70 feet high, reinforced by 300 towers. The name Meropoli was later changed to Vercelli by order of King Beloisio.

The city’s prominence endured through its role as a rice-trading hub. This agricultural specialization brought international commerce and established institutions—an Experimental Rice Growing Station and Italy’s most important Rice Stock Exchange—that cemented Vercelli’s reputation across Europe.

What you see

The city preserves traces of its medieval fortifications and medieval street patterns that reflect its planned expansion. Its position on the Sesia continues to define its urban geography and landscape.

Cultural significance

Vercelli represents the evolution of an Italian provincial center from medieval fortress to early modern commercial powerhouse. Its specialization in rice cultivation and trade demonstrates how geography, innovation, and commerce transformed a regional city into a European market leader.
