Municipal Theater of Cagli – Virtual Tour 360°

CAGLI, MARCHE · 1878
Municipal Theater of Cagli

A restored 19th-century theater that has become a cultural hub for national and international artists, hosting acclaimed musicians, actors and directors through residency programs.

At a glance

The Comunale di Cagli ranks among the Marche’s most significant historical theaters. Inaugurated in 1878, it accommodates up to 500 spectators across a richly decorated hall featuring orchestra stalls, three tiers of boxes and a gallery. The stage bears an artistic curtain by Alessandro Venanzi.

History

The theater opened its doors in 1878 as a cultural institution for the town. Following substantial restoration work, it reopened to the public in 1999, fully compliant with modern safety and operational standards for entertainment venues. This renovation marked the beginning of its transformation into a major artistic destination.

What you see

The interior presents a richly ornamented design typical of late 19th-century Italian theater architecture. The hall’s tiered configuration—stalls below, three levels of boxes, and a gallery above—creates an intimate yet grand atmosphere. Alessandro Venanzi’s artistic stage curtain provides a distinguished focal point to the performance space.

Cultural significance

Since 1999, the theater has established itself as a national cultural reference point through a proven formula of artistic residencies. Prominent musicians including Ludovico Einaudi, Ramin Bahrami and Ezio Bosso have performed here; theater artists such as Marco Paolini, Valeria Moriconi and Glauco Mauri have also worked within its walls. This programming has elevated Cagli and the surrounding Pesarese Apennine region’s cultural profile.
