Bishop’s Palace – Diocesan Library

A medieval episcopal residence in the heart of Narni, renovated in the early modern period and now home to the diocesan archive and documentation center.

At a glance

The Bishop’s Palace stands between Piazza Garibaldi and Piazza Cavour, serving as both a historical monument and a working repository of ecclesiastical and municipal records. The building preserves centuries of documents belonging to the Episcopal Curia and the Municipality of Narni.

History

The palace originated as a medieval structure before undergoing significant renovation in 1600 under Bishop Raimondo Castelli. The building’s role evolved over centuries, functioning as an episcopal residence and administrative center. Until 2007, it housed the municipal art gallery, which was subsequently relocated to Palazzo Eroli.

What you see

The first floor contains the Diocesan Center for Documentation, organized to accommodate both archival storage and research access. The building’s Renaissance-era renovations reflect the tastes and priorities of early seventeenth-century ecclesiastical patronage.

Cultural significance

The palace represents an important institutional landmark in Narni’s urban fabric, connecting the city’s religious administration with its civic governance through shared documentation. The preservation of these archives provides essential primary sources for understanding the region’s history.
