Teatro Greco di Taormina

The Teatro Greco di Taormina is a Hellenistic theatre built in the third century BC on a terrace of Monte Tauro, with one of the most celebrated views in the Mediterranean: the stage backdrop frames the cone of Mount Etna rising above the Ionian Sea. Rebuilt extensively by the Romans in the second century AD, it is today a major venue for summer performances of opera, cinema, and music.

History

Originally constructed by the Greek colonists of Tauromenion around the third century BC, the theatre was substantially enlarged and modified by Rome — the Romans replaced the Greek orchestra with an arena floor for gladiatorial combat, adding a high stage building (scaena) of which the central arch survives. The structure fell into disuse after antiquity and was partly quarried for building material before archaeological investigation began in the nineteenth century. The first modern theatrical performances were staged in the 1930s.

What to See

The cavea (seating area) is carved partly from the natural rock of the hillside, with 35 rows of seats in nine sections. The three surviving arches of the Roman scaena frame the view toward Etna and the sea — a composition that has made this one of the most-photographed ancient monuments in Sicily. The orchestra and stage floor have been adapted for modern performances; summer events include the Taormina Arte film festival and international music concerts.

Getting There

Taormina is served by train to Taormina-Giardini station (on the Messina–Catania line), then cable car or bus to the town centre. The theatre is a 10-minute walk from Corso Umberto, the main street. Open daily; summer concert tickets are sold separately through Taormina Arte.
