Olivetti Shop in San Marco Square
Carlo Scarpa’s 1958 retail masterpiece transforms a confined Venetian space into a luminous synthesis of modernist design and local tradition.
At a glance
Designed by architect Carlo Scarpa for Adriano Olivetti, this compact shop on the Procuratie Vecchie achieves monumental presence through precision and transparency. The intervention balances twentieth-century modernism with Venetian architectural heritage, earning recognition as one of the era’s clearest statements of contemporary design.
History
Commissioned in 1958 by Adriano Olivetti, the shop was designed by Carlo Scarpa to showcase Olivetti typewriters and business machines within the historic fabric of San Marco Square. For many years the space lost its original function and fell into neglect. On 20 April 2011, following careful philological restoration, the shop reopened to the public. The work recovered its original colors, furnishings, and display of Olivetti machines. Assicurazioni Generali, the current owner, entrusted the site to Fondo Ambiente Italiano, which oversaw restoration and continues its maintenance and public access.
What you see
Scarpa’s design maximizes spatial efficiency within a modest footprint on the Procuratie Vecchie. The architecture achieves visual breadth and transparency through controlled proportions and refined materials. Every detail—from furnishings to lighting—reflects the architect’s meticulous hand. The intervention demonstrates how modernist principles can coexist with historical context without compromise, respecting Venetian tradition while advancing contemporary expression.
Cultural significance
Critic Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti described it as “one of the clearest masterpieces of contemporary architecture.” The shop exemplifies Scarpa’s philosophy of intelligent spatial design and craftsmanship. It stands as a pivotal twentieth-century work that bridges corporate modernism and local architectural identity, demonstrating how a commercial interior can achieve artistic and cultural weight.
