Acaja Castle

Fossano, Piemonte · 14th century

Acaja Castle

A monumental fortress commissioned by Philip I of Savoy-Acaia in 1314, the castle dominates Fossano’s skyline and remains a defining symbol of the town.

At a glance

Acaja Castle stands prominently in Piazza Castello, anchoring the medieval center of Fossano with its imposing presence. Built as a defensive stronghold in a strategically panoramic location, the castle now serves dual cultural purposes: it houses the town’s Historical Archive and civic library while hosting significant civic events.

History

Philip I of Savoy-Acaia ordered the castle’s construction in 1314. By 1332, just eight years later, the fundamental structures were complete—a remarkably swift achievement for such a vast undertaking. The scale of the project was extraordinary: hundreds of workers labored on site using 3,355,000 bricks, 26,000 tiles, and 19,861 stone carts. The Historical Archive now housed within contains ancient documents dating back to the thirteenth century.

What you see

The castle’s fortified design reflects its origins as a defensive structure positioned to command the landscape. Its architectural presence continues to characterize Fossano’s skyline, maintaining the visual dominance established nearly seven centuries ago.

Cultural significance

Acaja Castle embodies the power and ambition of Savoy rule in the Piedmont region. Beyond its historical importance as an archival repository, the castle serves as a living cultural venue. Each June it hosts the historic Palio dei Borghi and Giostra dell’Oca, traditional events that connect contemporary Fossano to its medieval past. The castle is part of the “Open Castles” circuit of Lower Piedmont.
