Museum of Warsaw

A museum dedicated to Warsaw’s history, rebuilt after World War II destruction and substantially renewed in the early 21st century.

At a glance

The Museum of Warsaw occupies eleven townhouses in the Old Town Market Square, the historic heart of the city. The museum traces Warsaw’s development through art, artifacts, and documents spanning centuries. Its collection encompasses everything from medieval objects to modern memorabilia.

History

Founded in 1936 as the Old Warsaw Museum, the institution was housed in three municipal buildings acquired from private owners. During the Warsaw Uprising in World War II, the museum and its entire collection were destroyed. Following the city’s liberation, the museum reopened under its current name as part of Warsaw’s extraordinary postwar reconstruction effort. The buildings were meticulously rebuilt between 1948 and 1954, restoring the market square’s architectural character. A major renovation of all eleven houses took place in 2010–2012, supported by Norwegian funding. The museum adopted its present name officially in April 2014.

What you see

The museum occupies a series of adjoining townhouses characteristic of Warsaw’s Old Town, with facades and interiors reconstructed to reflect their pre-war appearance. The buildings frame one side of the Market Square, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Interior spaces showcase period rooms, display galleries, and thematic exhibitions arranged across multiple levels.

Cultural significance

The Museum of Warsaw serves as custodian of the city’s identity and memory. Its existence represents Warsaw’s resilience—a institution destroyed and faithfully rebuilt, mirroring the city’s own reconstruction. The museum documents urban transformation across centuries and preserves testimony to the experiences of Warsaw’s residents across different eras.
