History
Founded in 1862 as the Museum of Fine Arts of Warsaw, the institution grew steadily through acquisition and donation. Its current modernist structure was built between 1927 and 1938 after designs by architect Tadeusz Tołwiński. Since 1933, the east wing has housed the Museum of the Polish Army. The Second World War brought catastrophic losses: the museum lost 99 percent of its numismatic collection, all watches, 80 percent of gold and jewelry, and significant percentages of decorative arts through German looting. The museum was nationalized in 1945 and subsequently rebuilt its collections.
