Museum of the City and Territory of Cori
A regional museum housed in the Monumental Complex of S. Oliva, tracing 35 centuries of human settlement and cultural transformation across the Lepini Mountains.
At a glance
The Museum of the City and Territory occupies three floors of the Monumental Complex of S. Oliva, spanning approximately 1,000 square meters. It presents the archaeological and historical record of the Lepini region through eight chronological and thematic sections, interpreting the contemporary landscape as a layering of natural and cultural forces shaped by human interaction with the environment.
History
The Monumental Complex itself embodies centuries of settlement. Its foundations include remains of a Roman temple dating to the 4th–2nd century BC, overlaid by a medieval church from the first half of the 12th century, and a Renaissance convent constructed between 1467 and 1480. This architectural palimpsest reflects the region’s continuous habitation from antiquity through the Renaissance.
What you see
The complex preserves notable Renaissance sculptures and frescoes in the Campagna Romana tradition. Within the museum galleries, visitors encounter approximately 800 original objects spanning prehistory to the Roman imperial age—inscriptions, statues, ceramics, and bronzes—alongside medieval and Renaissance ceramics, archival documents, and 18th and 19th century prints.
The display includes over 30 replicas of significant vases, bronzes, statues, and coins; four models; more than 150 large-format photographic reproductions of monuments, frescoes, sculptures, historical maps, and aerial views; cartographic studies; and over 100 explanatory panels with 500 illustrations. Audiovisual elements include 27 television screens and a megascreen presenting documentary and archival films on local history and art.
Cultural significance
The museum serves as a scholarly and educational hub for understanding territorial transformation across 35 centuries. It supports interdisciplinary research in collaboration with national and international institutions, hosts university internships and student fieldwork, and functions as a resource for local and regional schools and heritage advocacy organizations.
