Kamenjak Park — Cape Kamenjak
Cape Kamenjak (Rt Kamenjak) is a protected nature park at the southernmost tip of the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia, covering approximately 384 hectares of unspoilt limestone coastline, meadows, and maquis scrubland. Designated a significant landscape reserve by the Croatian Ministry of Environment, it is celebrated for its dramatic sea cliffs, hidden pebble coves, and extraordinary biodiversity including one of Europe’s rarer sea-cliff orchid communities. The cape’s crystal-clear waters and absence of mass tourism infrastructure have made it one of the Adriatic’s most sought-after wild swimming and snorkelling destinations.

Overview
Kamenjak occupies the final 4 km of the Istrian Peninsula south of the village of Premantura, forming a slender rocky headland that juts into the Adriatic between the Gulf of Pula to the west and the Medulin Archipelago to the east. The park contains more than 30 individually named coves (uvale) cut into white and ochre limestone by centuries of wave action, ranging from small sea caves to broad sheltered bays. Aside from a single refreshment kiosk near the southern tip, the landscape is essentially unbuilt, preserving a rare pocket of unmodified Adriatic coastline within easy reach of Pula airport.
History
The area around Cape Kamenjak was inhabited in antiquity; traces of Iron Age and Roman settlement have been identified on the plateau above the cliffs. During the Venetian and Habsburg periods the cape served as open pasture and saltpan territory for the communities of Premantura and Medulin. Protection as a significant landscape reserve was granted in 1996 by the Croatian government, following advocacy by local naturalists who documented the cape’s exceptional orchid flora — including several species of the genus Ophrys — and its role as a nesting habitat for peregrine falcons and other cliff-nesting birds.
What you see
The park’s terrain alternates between flat limestone pavements covered in aromatic macchia (rosemary, rock cistus, and wild sage), open meadows brilliant with spring orchids, and sheer sea cliffs falling five to fifteen metres into gin-clear turquoise water. The most photographed feature is the southernmost cliff face, where surfers gather for a wave that breaks over a shallow reef — a rare Atlantic-style break on the Adriatic coast. Underwater, Posidonia meadows and rocky reef habitats support a rich fish community visible to snorkellers in excellent visibility.
Cultural significance
Kamenjak represents one of the last stretches of undeveloped Adriatic coastline in northern Croatia and has become a benchmark for community-led conservation management in the region. The Public Institution Kamenjak, set up by the municipality of Medulin, manages visitor flows and revenues to fund ecological monitoring — a model cited by Croatian planners seeking alternatives to mass-tourism development on protected shorelines.
Practical information
The park entrance is at the southern edge of Premantura village; a small seasonal admission fee is charged per person and per vehicle. The gravel tracks inside are suitable for bicycles and slow-moving cars. Bring water and sun protection — shade is scarce. Check the official website of the Public Institution Kamenjak for current fees and seasonal opening dates.
Getting there
Premantura is 12 km south of Pula city centre. By car: follow signs to Premantura from the Medulin junction, then continue through the village to the park gate. In summer, shuttle buses operate from Pula. Alternatively, bicycle hire is available in Pula and Medulin; the cycle route through Premantura to the cape is flat and takes approximately 40 minutes from Medulin harbour.
