FBML – Exhibition Palace

A restored cultural venue in central Lucca hosting exhibitions, lectures and conferences within a historic complex anchored by a former oratorio.

At a glance

The FBML – Exhibition Palace combines an auditorium (the Oratorio della Madonnina) with three floors of exhibition galleries. The Banca del Monte di Lucca Foundation restored the entire complex and opened it to the public in December 2008, transforming a historic building into an active cultural centre for the city.

History

Originally serving multiple functions throughout its history, the complex fell into disuse before the Banca del Monte di Lucca Foundation undertook comprehensive renovation. The reopening occurred in phases, with the auditorium and exhibition halls inaugurated together in December 2008 to launch the Foundation’s exhibition programme. The restoration returned this ancient building to public life and civic heritage.

What you see

The auditorium seats 99 and features a modular speakers’ table accommodating six to eight presenters, equipped with projection monitors. The adjacent building houses exhibition galleries distributed across three floors. The architectural unity of both spaces—one historic, one dedicated to contemporary cultural display—creates a functional venue designed for diverse programming.

Cultural significance

The palace serves as Lucca’s platform for personal and collective art exhibitions, retrospectives by both Italian and international artists, and scholarly events. Free admission to the exhibition rooms democratises access to contemporary and historical artistic works. Through lectures, conferences and cultural activities, the venue strengthens dialogue between heritage preservation and living artistic practice.
