Palazzo Salituri alla Giudecca
A Renaissance palace in the heart of Castrovillari’s historic center, layered with refinements across three centuries and protected as a national monument.
At a glance
This sixteenth-century stately home represents a successful synthesis of medieval foundations and later Renaissance and Baroque interventions. Known by several names—Parrasio Palace, Musitano, Salituri—it stands on Via Giudecca in the Civita district and ranks among the city’s most beautiful historic buildings.
History
The palace rises on structures possibly medieval in origin. At the end of the sixteenth century, a smaller edifice was constructed on these foundations, featuring an elegant loggia that overlooked the courtyard—now closed. During the eighteenth century, the building was enlarged and substantially enriched with refined interior stuccoes that remain characteristic of several rooms today. The complex thus documents shifting tastes and techniques across Renaissance, early modern, and Baroque periods.
What you see
The exterior and interior display refined stuccoes and decorative fake brick work executed in a taste reminiscent of Giulio Romano’s architectural vocabulary. The original sixteenth-century loggia, though now sealed, testifies to Renaissance courtyard design. Eighteenth-century interventions enlarged the building vertically and introduced ornamental plasterwork that distinguishes key interior spaces, creating a layered visual narrative of aesthetic evolution.
Cultural significance
Palazzo Salituri exemplifies the architectural ambitions of Calabrian nobility during the early modern period. Its stylistic affiliations with Romano’s decorative language place it within broader Italian Renaissance currents. The building’s preservation and national protection underscore its importance as a document of regional building practice and aristocratic taste.
