Castello di Guarene
The Castello di Guarene crowns the hill-town of Guarene, a comune of around 3,500 inhabitants in the Province of Cuneo, in the Roero district of Piedmont. Rebuilt in the 18th century and set above formal Italian-style gardens, the castle is the dominant landmark of one of the villages listed among I Borghi più belli d’Italia (“The most beautiful villages of Italy”).

Overview
Guarene lies in the Roero, about 45 kilometres south-east of Turin and close to Alba, the capital of the Langhe and white-truffle country. The castle stands at the top of the village, overlooking the surrounding vineyards and the wider hill landscape of the Roero. Together with the 17th-century Palazzo Re Rebaudengo, it forms the principal heritage of the town.
History
The present castle was rebuilt in the 18th century on the commanding site above Guarene, replacing earlier structures in a period when Piedmontese noble families renewed their country seats in elegant new forms. Its formal Italian-style gardens belong to this same 18th-century campaign. The village’s location in the Roero, bordering Alba, tied its fortunes to the wine and agricultural economy of the Langhe-Roero hills.
What you see
The castle presents a stately 18th-century residential block raised on its hilltop, fronted by Italian-style gardens laid out with geometric parterres. From its terraces it commands sweeping views over the Roero vineyards. Below in the village, the 17th-century Palazzo Re Rebaudengo now serves as a venue for exhibitions.
Cultural significance
As the defining monument of Guarene — one of I Borghi più belli d’Italia — the castle exemplifies the aristocratic country residences of 18th-century Piedmont set within the celebrated Langhe-Roero wine landscape, itself a region of recognised cultural and scenic value.
