Overview

The Viote Alpine Botanical Garden is a living scientific collection set against the panoramic backdrop of the Monte Bondone massif and its views over the Adige valley and the Dolomites. The garden is managed by the MUSE — Science Museum of Trento, which also coordinates research into alpine flora and climate change impacts on mountain vegetation. Its 360° virtual tour makes it accessible to visitors unable to reach the high-altitude site in person.

History

The garden was established in 1938 by the Municipality of Trento and the local alpine association, with the aim of conserving alpine plant species threatened by collecting and land-use change. Over the decades, its collections expanded to represent mountain flora from the Alps, Apennines, Pyrenees, Carpathians, and beyond. Management was eventually entrusted to the MUSE Science Museum, integrating the garden into a broader network of natural heritage education in Trentino. The site has also served as a field station for phenological research and biodiversity monitoring.

What you see

The garden extends across several hectares of the Viote plateau, divided into thematic sections organised by geographic origin, habitat type, and plant family. Rock gardens, peat bogs, and meadow patches recreate the microhabitats in which alpine species naturally grow. Among the highlights are rare endemic species of the eastern Alps, carnivorous plants adapted to acidic bog conditions, and a representative collection of Alpine orchids. In late spring and early summer, the flowering season transforms the garden into a spectacular display of colour at altitude.

Cultural significance

As one of the earliest alpine botanical gardens in Italy, the Viote garden represents a century of commitment to mountain conservation and scientific education in Trentino. It embodies the region’s tradition of close engagement with its natural Alpine environment, linking scientific research, heritage preservation, and public education.
