Villa Fini
A Venetian mainland villa whose elegant baroque transformation by the Fini family made it a significant example of Veneto architecture before its destruction in 2015.
At a glance
Villa Fini began as a modest country property and evolved into an architecturally ambitious residence through the artistic vision of its eighteenth-century owners. Located in Dolo along the Riviera Martiri della Libertà, the villa represented the aspirations of the Venetian merchant class to create refined country retreats.
History
The property first appears in documented records in 1665, when Zuane Antonio Toderini purchased the lands and buildings of Paolo Santorini—a substantial holding of seventy-five fields with structures including a Sunday house then under construction.
By the final decades of the seventeenth century, the complex passed to the Fini family, who undertook the most significant architectural and decorative work on the site. According to the scholarship of Ennio Concina and Elena Bassi, these interventions are attributed to architect Alessandro Tremignon, who simultaneously served the Fini family on prestigious Venetian projects, including the church of San Moisè and Palazzo Flangini-Fini in Venice’s historic center.
On 8 July 2015, a violent whirlwind destroyed and razed the villa to the ground.
What you see
The villa no longer exists. Historical records and architectural scholarship attributed to Tremignon suggest it exemplified baroque sensibilities characteristic of Veneto villas of the period, though detailed descriptions of its composition and decorative schemes are not available in this source.
Cultural significance
Villa Fini held importance as a documented work attributed to Alessandro Tremignon, one of the Venetian Republic’s notable architects. Its presence in Dolo connected the mainland villa tradition to the sophisticated architectural patronage of Venice’s merchant elite, illustrating the cultural and economic reach of Venetian families into the countryside.
