Po delta Park

PORTO TOLLE, VENETO

Po Delta Park

Europe’s largest wetland unfolds where the Po River branches into seven streams before meeting the Adriatic Sea, creating a landscape of reeds, lagoons and rare light.

At a glance

The Po Delta Park encompasses over 370 bird species and some of Italy’s most significant wetland habitat. Nine municipalities span this natural oasis in the province of Rovigo, where the Po—known as the “sweet giant”—opens like a fan across the landscape before reaching the sea.

History

The Po Delta represents millennia of human intervention and natural transformation. Navigation along the Po di Goro traces the ancient history of reclamation efforts that have shaped this landscape. At the mouth of the Po di Tolle lies the Sacca di Scardovari, a productive breeding ground for mussels and clams that has sustained fishing communities for centuries.

What you see

The Park’s character shifts dramatically across its seven branches. The Po di Maistra leads to the Ca Pisani floodplain oasis. The Venice branch—the main channel—reveals river basins, lagoon benches, sandy islets and extensive reed beds. Dawn brings low mists that soften sound and vision; sunset ignites the waters with reddish light. The large water pump at Ca Vendramin now houses the Reclamation Museum, documenting the delta’s engineering history. The Litoran Botanical Garden in Rosolina, designated a Site of Community Importance, displays the region’s botanical wealth.

Cultural significance

The delta sustains both migratory and sedentary bird populations, making it essential for ornithology and conservation. The landscape embodies the relationship between human settlement and wetland ecology—centuries of drainage and cultivation coexist with wild nature. Traditional fishermen’s practices continue in the “cavane,” characteristic huts where visitors can taste locally caught fish.
