Overview
MudeP — the Museum of the Nativity — is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the presepe, the traditional Nativity scene that has been a central element of Italian Catholic and folk culture since at least the thirteenth century, when Saint Francis of Assisi staged the first living Nativity at Greccio in 1223. The museum brings together figurines, landscapes, and sacred objects that represent the full range of Italian regional craftsmanship in this distinctive art form. A 360° virtual tour extends access to visitors across the world.
History
The tradition of the presepe in Italy developed most elaborately in Naples from the seventeenth century onwards, when aristocratic and religious patrons commissioned elaborate baroque scenes with terracotta or wooden figures dressed in period textiles. Over time, each Italian region developed its own characteristic style and materials. MudeP was established to safeguard this heritage, bringing together examples from multiple traditions and periods into a single institutional collection.
What you see
The museum displays Nativity figures and complete presepe compositions spanning several centuries and regional traditions. Highlights typically include Neapolitan baroque figurines with intricately crafted costumes, Alpine wooden carvings in the south Tyrolese tradition, and contemporary interpretations by living artisans. Explanatory panels contextualise the religious, cultural, and craft dimensions of each work.
Cultural significance
The Nativity scene tradition was inscribed by UNESCO on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2023 as part of Italy’s nomination of the presepe. MudeP contributes directly to the preservation of this living heritage, documenting the artisanal knowledge and devotional practice that have sustained the tradition for eight centuries.
