MeTe – Museum of Memory and the Territory

A community-driven museum in Siculiana’s historic Casale district preserving local memory through photographs, ethnographic objects, and the stories of ordinary life.

At a glance

MeTe houses vintage photographs, tools from wheat production and winemaking, relics of the Garibaldian doctor Giuseppe Basile, and memorials to those lost in the Great War. The museum operates as a living archive rather than a repository of forgotten things, inviting active participation from the community it documents.

History

The museum’s origins trace to 2009, when members of the ALT association (Associazione Leisure and Tourisme) began collecting photographs and oral histories from Siculiana. A 2010 exhibition titled “Fragments of Memory” marked an early milestone, displayed during the town’s eighteenth-century foundation celebrations at Chiaramonte Castle.

Formal establishment came in 2013, when the municipality granted the ALT association use of premises in via Picarella. Without public funding, the association raised money from private donors and volunteers. On 30 April 2014, the museum officially opened. Since 2015, it has expanded into an open-air initiative encompassing the historic center through artistic installations and urban regeneration projects.

What you see

The collection spans domestic and agricultural heritage: hand tools documenting the wheat cycle, winemaking implements, and period photographs arranged chronologically. A multimedia system allows visitors to move between visual and textual content, connecting objects to lived experience.

The religious section reflects spiritual traditions, while a dedicated memorial honors local casualties of the First World War. Vintage photography exhibitions remain central—digitized and catalogued through ethnographic research begun during the museum’s founding years.

Cultural significance

MeTe embodies a deliberate philosophy: memory as active social practice rather than static display. It frames local heritage as a tool for building community conscience and fostering dialogue about cultural identity.

As a grassroots initiative sustained entirely by member contributions, the museum demonstrates how smaller towns can document and celebrate their own histories without institutional resources—prioritizing participation over preservation alone.
