Marble Caves

PUERTO RÍO TRANQUILO, AYSÉN

Marble Caves

Spectacular formations of calcium carbonate sculpted by water erosion along Lake Buenos Aires, explorable by boat when water levels permit.

At a glance

The Catedral de Mármol and its companion formations—the Capilla de Mármol and Caverna de Mármol—represent nature’s monumental architecture on a small archipelago near the shore of Lake Buenos Aires, also known as General Carrera. These mineral islands emerge a few meters from the coast and are accessible only by water.

History

The marble caves were created through millennia of water erosion. Waves and currents gradually carved into the coastal escarpments of calcium carbonate, hollowing out chambers and archways that visitors encounter today. The process continues, reshaping the formations with each season.

What you see

The cathedral is distinguished by towering marble walls and vaulted chambers accessible by boat. The chapel complements it with its own carved features. When lake water levels drop sufficiently, small boats can navigate inside these caverns, revealing intricate stratification and the interplay of light on polished stone surfaces. The turquoise and milky waters reflect the white marble, creating an otherworldly landscape.

Cultural significance

The Marble Caves have become one of Aysén’s most recognizable natural landmarks, symbolizing the region’s dramatic geology and pristine wilderness. They exemplify how geological forces and hydrological processes create sublime landscapes in Chilean Patagonia.
