Valletta

The capital of Malta, founded by the Knights Hospitallers in 1566 and named after their grand master Jean de la Valette, Valletta stands as a fortified city rich with layers of Mediterranean history.

At a glance

Valletta is the capital city of Malta, an archipelago positioned between Sicily and North Africa in the central Mediterranean. The city was designated European Capital of Culture in 2018, alongside Leeuwarden. Its streets and harbors reflect centuries of rule by Romans, Moors, the Knights of St. John, the French, and the English.

History

The Knights Hospitallers founded Valletta in 1566, naming it in honor of their grand master Jean de la Valette—the Latin designation was Humilissima Civitas Valettae, “The humble city of Valletta.” In Maltese, the city is known as Il-Belt, meaning simply “The City.” Before the Knights’ arrival, Malta’s landscape bore evidence of earlier inhabitants: Romans ruled the islands, followed by Moorish occupiers. After the Knights came French and English governance, each era leaving its mark on the city’s architecture and fortifications.

What you see

Valletta is renowned for its historical sites documenting the various rulers who controlled the island. Throughout Malta are numerous fortresses and megalithic temples. The Hal Saflieni Hypogeum, an underground complex of stone and mortuary chambers, dates to approximately 4000 BC and represents one of the Mediterranean’s most ancient monumental structures.

Cultural significance

Valletta embodies the convergence of Mediterranean civilizations. Its fortified harbor and streetscapes preserve the architectural language of the Knights Hospitallers alongside earlier and later colonial influences. The city’s recognition as European Capital of Culture acknowledges its role in Malta’s cultural identity and its importance to European heritage.
