Hazzard County Filming Locations

The real-world locations in Newton County, Georgia that doubled as the fictional Hazzard County in the cult television series The Dukes of Hazzard, a show that defined American television comedy through seven seasons of high-speed chases and good-natured chaos.

At a glance

Covington and nearby Conyers served as the primary filming locations for The Dukes of Hazzard, which broadcast from January 1979 to February 1985. The series later relocated production to Warner Bros. Studios in California, but the Georgia locations remain iconic in television history.

History

The Dukes of Hazzard premiered on January 26, 1979, designed by Gy Waldron and produced by Warner Bros. Television in collaboration with Lou Step Productions and Piggy Productions. The show ran for seven seasons, airing 147 episodes on CBS before concluding February 8, 1985.

Early episodes were filmed in Covington and Conyers before production shifted to California studios. The series became a cultural phenomenon, particularly celebrated for its automotive stunts and country-music soundtrack.

What you see

The series featured the Duke family—cousins Bo and Luke, their cousin Daisy, and Uncle Jesse—navigating life under parole restrictions that confined them to county boundaries. The Boar’s Nest, where Daisy worked as a waitress and locals gathered for music and beer, was a central location; it is now a church.

The real star was General Lee, a 1969 Dodge Charger, which performed spectacular jumps and chases across dirt roads. The most famous jump measured 236 feet (approximately 70 meters), executed by stuntman Al Wyatt.

Cultural significance

The show balanced humor with themes of family loyalty and resourcefulness. The Duke boys, under parole after a bootlegging incident, worked odd jobs and participated in car races while thwarting the schemes of corrupt Commissioner Boss Hogg and his associates in local law enforcement.

General Lee became an iconic film vehicle, though producing the show required extensive automotive preparation. Between 256 and 321 Dodge Chargers were reportedly prepared across the seven seasons. Stuntmen including John Cade, Corey Eubanks, and Buzz Bundy performed approximately 40 percent of the vehicle jumps, with Bundy specializing in two-wheel stunts.
