Etroubles
A mountain village in the Gran San Bernardo Valley, Etroubles sits halfway between Aosta and the Swiss border, commanding centuries of Alpine trade and pilgrimage routes.
At a glance
Etroubles occupies a strategic position in the Gran San Bernardo Valley, a lateral valley of the Aosta Valley in north-western Italy. Located 16 km from Aosta and the Swiss border, the village lies on the road ascending to the Gran San Bernardo pass; the tunnel beneath it lies 5 km away. The town experiences a cold, temperate climate with annual rainfall of 1,119 mm and average temperatures ranging from −2.7 °C in January to 15.5 °C in July.
History
The toponym derives from Étroubbla in the Valdostan dialect, meaning stubble or straw—the chaff left at the roots of wheat, oats or barley. The Latin name was Stipulis. In Roman times, the settlement was called Restapolis and served as the principal centre of the valley, likely hosting a winter garrison camp along the Via delle Gallie, the ancient road connecting Italy to Gaul.
Etroubles functioned as the capital of the Gran San Bernardo Valley throughout the Middle Ages. It gained prominence as one of the key towns along the Via Francigena, the pilgrim route to Rome. Between 1939 and 1946, during Fascism, it was officially renamed Etroble.
