MEZZANA MORTIGLIENGO, PIEMONTE

EcoMuseum of Mortigliengo – Mino Home

A restored rural dwelling that documents the sustainable practices and traditional crafts of the Biellese region through domestic objects, tools, and furnishings spanning centuries.

At a glance

Casa Mino preserves the material culture of Mortigliengo, a small Piedmontese hamlet. The ecomuseum displays objects, textiles, documents, and machinery connected to local economic activities: hemp processing, walnut oil production, chestnut cultivation, textile work, traditional construction, and subsistence farming. The house itself embodies the architectural character of the region.

History

Mortigliengo’s economy rested on circular, resource-based practices refined over generations. Hemp, walnuts, chestnuts, grapes, and apples formed the foundation of rural life. Casa Mino documents this heritage through artifacts and photographic records. The settlement remains closely bound to its surrounding woodland, which sustained both livelihood and identity across centuries.

What you see

The building follows the typical Biellese plan: a central open courtyard, narrow multi-storey structure with attic, generous balconies, and small chambers. Ground level housed the cellar and barn. Each room contains period furnishings, agricultural and textile equipment, and domestic goods arranged to show how domestic space and production were integrated. Photographs and documents trace the transformation of raw materials into finished goods.

Cultural significance

Casa Mino illustrates how sustainable economy was embedded in rural communities long before the term entered modern discourse. The collection reveals the knowledge systems embedded in territory and materials. The ecomuseum connects domestic architecture, local crafts, environmental stewardship, and cultural continuity—showing how small communities achieved resilience through resourcefulness.
