Doha
The capital and largest city of Qatar, Doha has grown from a fortified settlement into a modern metropolis that serves as the political and cultural centre of the Arabian Peninsula state.
At a glance
Doha sits on the Persian Gulf as Qatar’s primary urban centre, home to approximately 956,460 inhabitants as of 2015. The city and its suburban areas contain roughly 60 per cent of the state’s total population. A cosmopolitan hub, Doha hosts government institutions, international military headquarters, and major educational facilities.
History
The city was founded in 1825 under the name Al Bida. That same year, during a conflict between Qatar and Bahrain, Doha sustained severe damage from forces allied with Abu Dhabi. In 1882, the fortress of Al Wajbah was constructed near the city to strengthen its defences. Doha became the capital of Qatar’s British protectorate in 1916, then transitioned to capital of the independent state upon Qatar’s independence from the United Kingdom in 1971.
What you see
The city blends historical landmarks with contemporary development. Al Wajbah fortress remains a significant structure from the 19th century. Modern Doha features the seat of government and extensive infrastructure supporting its role as a major regional centre. Education City, located near Doha, encompasses multiple university campuses and research institutes dedicated to innovation.
Cultural significance
Doha represents Qatar’s transformation from a small fortified settlement to a global city. The name itself derives from the Arabic word for “big tree,” reflecting its historical identity. As the administrative heart of Qatar and host to institutions like the headquarters of the US Military Central Command (the largest in the Middle East), Doha holds strategic importance across political, military, and educational domains.
