Overview
Castellaneta lies on the northern edge of the Murgia Tarantina, a limestone upland characterised by the gravine — deep, narrow ravines carved by ancient watercourses — that define much of the landscape between Taranto and Matera. The town is part of the Comunità Montana della Murgia Tarantina and is surrounded by olive groves, vineyards, and the typical Mediterranean maquis of interior Puglia. Its historic centre occupies a promontory above the main gravina, commanding views over a landscape of extraordinary natural beauty that extends south towards the Ionian coast.
History
Castellaneta was settled in the early medieval period and developed as a fortified hilltop town typical of the Apulian interior. It became a diocesan seat, and its cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, was built in the Romanesque style in the twelfth century and subsequently modified in the baroque era. The town passed through Norman, Hohenstaufen, Angevin, and Aragonese rule before becoming part of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. Its most celebrated son, Rodolfo Alfonso Raffaello Pierre Filibert Guglielmi di Valentina d’Antonguolla — known to the world as Rudolph Valentino — was born here on 6 May 1895 and emigrated to the United States in 1913, going on to define the screen idol in silent cinema.

Castellaneta Marina (coastal resort) has a railway station on the Taranto–Reggio Calabria line; the hilltop town is approximately 12 km inland, accessible by local bus or car. Taranto is the main rail hub, served by connections to Bari, Lecce, and Naples. By car, Castellaneta is reachable from the SS7 Appia or from the A14 motorway via Taranto. Bari Karol Wojtyła International Airport (100 km north) is the nearest major air hub.
