Calascio Fortress
Perched at 1,460 metres within the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, this imposing white-stone fortress stands among Italy’s highest medieval structures, commanding views over its abandoned village below.
At a glance
The Rocca di Calascio is a medieval fortress built entirely in white stone, located in the province of L’Aquila. Its dramatic mountain setting and well-preserved appearance have made it one of Abruzzo’s most recognisable landmarks and a sought-after filming location.
History
The fortress overlooks an ancient village that once thrived below. By the twentieth century, the last families had departed, and both settlement and fortress fell into abandonment. The castle’s fortunes changed at the century’s end when its cinematic appeal—as a setting for major films—sparked renewed interest in the site.
Restoration and consolidation work transformed the fortress into a functioning attraction. Local families undertook recovery of village houses and their conversion into accommodation, establishing a widespread hotel adjacent to the castle and revitalising the area as a tourist destination.
What you see
The fortress is distinguished by its construction entirely in white stone, creating a striking appearance against the mountain landscape. Its elevated position commands extensive views across the surrounding peaks and valleys of the national park.
Cultural significance
The Rocca di Calascio has become known internationally through its role in major films. It served as a setting for “Lady Hawke” and “The Name of the Rose,” and more recently appeared in “The American” with George Clooney, bringing global attention to this remote Abruzzo landmark.
