Archaeology Museum of Catalonia

Housed in a restored pavilion from the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition, this museum preserves and presents the archaeological heritage of Catalonia.

At a glance

The Archaeology Museum of Catalonia (Museu d’Arqueologia de Catalunya, or MAC) occupies the former Palace of Graphic Arts on Montjuïc hill. The museum was formally established in 1990 under the Museums of Catalonia Act, though its home has housed collections since 1932.

History

The Palace of Graphic Arts was constructed on Montjuïc for Barcelona’s 1929 International Exposition. Originally intended as a temporary pavilion, it was preserved and refitted by architect Josep Gudiol. The building reopened as the Archaeology Museum of Catalonia in 1932, making it one of the city’s earliest purpose-adapted museum spaces. The museum’s formal establishment came in 1990 under legislation creating the Museums of Catalonia system.

What you see

The Palace of Graphic Arts represents early-twentieth-century exposition architecture adapted for long-term institutional use. Gudiol’s refitting preserved the structure’s character while preparing it for museum functions. The Montjuïc setting places the building within one of Barcelona’s most significant cultural precincts, developed around the 1929 fair.

Cultural significance

The museum is the principal repository for Catalonia’s archaeological collections, spanning prehistory through the medieval period. Its establishment within a surviving 1929 exposition building links contemporary scholarship to Barcelona’s early modernization and cultural ambitions. The location on Montjuïc connects it to the hill’s broader role as a center for regional cultural institutions.
