The Cathedral of Reggio Calabria

The Cathedral of Reggio Calabria is the largest sacred building in Calabria.
It was rebuilt from scratch after the 1908 earthquake to a design by Father Carmelo Angiolini, in neo-Romanesque style.

Over time the vicissitudes of the Cathedral, linked to the alternation of ties with the Latin Church of Rome, first, with the Greek-Byzantine one, then, until the Norman advent (1061) and the restitution to the Latin influence, and several reconstructions for earthquakes, wars and pillages, some mentioned in the plaque of 1632, on the wall of the right aisle, until rebuilding in its current appearance after the 1908 earthquake.

The reconstruction work, on the initiative of Bishop Rinaldo Camillo Rousset, with the laying of the foundation stone on July 15, 1917, continued until September 2, 1928, the date of inauguration and consecration of the temple, and ended in 1929, with the construction of the Bell tower.

The building, based on an original project by Father Carmelo Angiolini, with subsequent adaptations of the shapes to the technologically advanced structure in reinforced concrete, is raised above the vast piazza, which is connected to a staircase on which the two statues of San Paolo are placed, on the left, and of Santo Stefano da Nicea, on the right, both by the sculptor Francesco Jerace (1934).
