Peak Tower

The Peak Tower is a distinctive wok-shaped shopping and entertainment complex perched at Victoria Gap near the summit of Victoria Peak on Hong Kong Island, at an elevation of approximately 396 metres. It serves as the upper terminal of the Peak Tram funicular railway and houses Sky Terrace 428, one of Hong Kong’s most visited observation platforms, together with restaurants, retail outlets, and the Madame Tussauds Hong Kong attraction. Both the Peak Tower and the Peak Tram are owned and operated by the Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels group and collectively promoted as The Peak.

Overview

Standing at Victoria Gap, The Peak Tower offers panoramic views over Hong Kong’s harbour, Kowloon, and on clear days into the hills of the Pearl River Delta. The tower’s unmistakable wok-shaped silhouette has become an icon of the Hong Kong skyline, photographed from the city below as much as visitors photograph the city from within it. It is consistently ranked among Hong Kong’s top tourist attractions, drawing millions of visitors annually.

History

Victoria Peak has attracted visitors since the colonial era: the Peak Tram funicular has been running since 1888, making it one of the oldest funicular railways in Asia. The first purpose-built Peak Tower was constructed in 1972. The current structure, designed by the British architect Terry Farrell and Partners in a bold deconstructivist style, replaced the earlier building and opened in 1997 — the year of Hong Kong’s handover to China. The design deliberately references the shape of a Chinese wok or cooking vessel, nodding to local culture while providing maximum panoramic terracing.

What you see

Sky Terrace 428 — named for its elevation of 428 metres above sea level — is the highest viewing platform in Hong Kong and provides a 360-degree panorama taking in Victoria Harbour, the skyscrapers of Central and Wan Chai, Kowloon and the New Territories beyond. Inside the tower, Madame Tussauds Hong Kong occupies two floors. Restaurants and cafés at various levels allow extended visits, and a retail arcade fills the lower floors. The surrounding Peak Galleria complex and the network of walking trails around the peak summit are within easy reach on foot.

Cultural significance

The Peak Tower and the Peak Tram together symbolise Hong Kong’s layered identity — colonial infrastructure, world-class commerce and a living relationship with the dramatic topography of Hong Kong Island. For over a century, a visit to Victoria Peak has been the defining experience of arriving in Hong Kong, and the current tower has made that tradition architecturally spectacular.
