Necropolis of the Banditaccia of Cerveteri

It is one of the largest necropolis of the ancient world.

Crossed by a sepulchral street over 2 km long, it developed from the 9th century BC to the Hellenistic-Roman age. The oldest tombs are of the well type, with incineration within biconical vessels, and of the pit type for buried. From the 7th century BC, with the prevalence of the burial rite, large tumuli developed with burial chambers carved into the tuff and decorated with motifs inspired by the forms of domestic architecture.

These monuments, which belonged to high-ranking families, have returned rich kits where the presence of materials imported from the Near East and Greece is frequent.

During the sixth century BC, the type of tumulus, now of medium and small forms, are flanked and progressively affirmed by the dice-like tombs lined up regularly along the sepulchral and cadastral roads.

During the 4th century BC the type of hypogeum is widespread, consisting of a single environment and with docks leaning against the walls with respect to which more imposing funerary monuments belonging to noble families constitute isolated episodes.

This is the case of the Tomb of the Reliefs which, located inside the Recinto della Banditaccia, exhibits on its walls a rich parade of everyday objects rendered in stucco and paintings, as well as, among the tombs of the "Comune", those are remembered of the Alcova, of the Sarcophagi, of the Triclinium, of the Tamsnie, monuments that, like the Torlonia Tomb in the necropolis of Monte Abatone, offer evidence of the exceptional experience of the funerary architecture of ancient Caere.

The necropolises of Cerveteri and Tarquinia were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2004 and constitute the first example of sites related to the Etruscan civilization (in-depth studies).
