Belluno is an Italian town that is the capital of the province of the same name in Veneto.
Founded as a Roman municipium in the 1st century BC, it is currently the most inhabited municipality in the province and the seventh and northernmost among the provincial capitals of the Veneto. The city is located at the confluence of the Ardo torrents and the Piave rivers, a strategic defensive position for which it was a protagonist in the two world wars.
The northernmost area of the municipal territory has been part of both the National Park of the Belluno Dolomites since 1988 (it is, among other things, the only provincial capital in Italy whose municipal territory is in a National Park), and of the of humanity of the Dolomites declared by UNESCO in 2009.
Belluno has also been awarded the title of Alpine city of the year 1999.
