Bachelor's Grove Cemetery is a cemetery in Bremen Township, Cook County, Illinois, in Chicago's southwest suburbs. The cemetery has also been called Bachelor Grove, Batchelor Grove, Batchelder's Grove, and Everden (or Everdon). This cemetery is the setting for a number of ghostlore stories.
In the Bachelor's Grove Cemetery where more than 100 cases of paranormal phenomena have been recorded. For this reason, Bachelor's Grove is considered one of the most haunted cemeteries in the world, and is the destination of many occult investigators and the curious every year. Bachelor's Grove is a very small cemetery, fenced on all sides and with a single gate to the south, from which a path runs the length of it.
To the southwest, the limits of the cemetery are bordered by a small stagnant lake. The cemetery has been neglected for decades and is subject to frequent acts of vandalism, probably due to the "paranormal" popularity of the place. The tombs and statues have been defaced and mutilated, and several coffins have been removed from the niches and the corpses stolen.
In various circumstances, remains of animals and fires have been found in the area near the lake, probably as a result of occult rites practiced during the night. In the American gangster era, between the 1920s and 1930s, it was customary to throw the corpses of the victims of settling accounts directly into the waters of the lake. The mysterious stories related to the cemetery began around the 60s.
Since 1965, in fact, the burial of the dead in that area stopped, and the cemetery became a destination for young people looking for thrills. The most famous apparition recorded in Bachelor's Grove is that of the "disappearing house" also called the "suspended house". This house is Victorian in style, over two floors, with an entrance surrounded by two columns and a staircase.
The house, seen in the distance, looks absolutely real. But those who have tried to get closer to it have seen it become more and more distant and sometimes disappear suddenly. According to legend, whoever managed to enter it never returned. This house has been seen by numerous witnesses, some of whom have even managed to draw and photograph it. Needless to say, there are no such buildings in the area.
Ghosts with human features have also been the object of numerous sightings, among which the most frequent is that of the "ghost monk" and the "woman in white" also known as the "Madonna of Bachelor's Grove". This woman is carrying a child and wanders seemingly aimlessly among the gravestones during the nights of a full moon. Popular belief has it that it is the ghost of a woman buried in the cemetery near her son's grave.
Other appearances include two-headed men, children, and strange human figures wrapped in a yellow halo. Several witnesses said they saw a ghost farmer with a horse. This sighting refers to a real event dating back to 1870, in which a farmer drowned with his horse in the waters of the lake. The cemetery has also been the scene of sightings of flashing lights, many of which have been recorded not only at night, but in broad daylight as well.
In 1971 a woman claimed to have managed to catch one in her hands, but felt nothing. Paranormal phenomena were often anticipated by sudden drops in temperature and feelings of anguish. In some cases, witnesses said they "felt" the presence of something among them that was watching them. In the 1990s there were numerous reports of a large black ghostly dog. The large animal appeared at the entrance to the driveway and once approached it disappeared into thin air.
According to mythology, these "grave dogs" would have the function of "guide" or "warning" for visitors not to go beyond the cemetery entrance. Plenty of paranormal investigators have attempted to capture the mysterious phenomena of Bachelor's Grove on film. Thousands of photographs show strange light effects, blurred bodies, ghostly faces. The most controversial photo was taken in the cemetery by Mary Huff, a member of the Ghost Research Society, on August 10, 1991 in broad daylight.
Huff used to take photos with infrared sensitive film whenever her equipment signaled something anomalous in the area. The photo clearly shows a semi-transparent young woman, dressed in clothes from another era, sitting on a gravestone. This figure was not visible to the naked eye by either Huff or her other staff members. It is one of the most famous photos in the world that portray a ghost. Investigators also managed to collect numerous audio material, obtained through recording systems installed on site. On the tapes, names of people who had died in the cemetery could be clearly heard, repeated over and over again.
