White House

The Frenchman Pierre L'Enfant designed the city of Washington DC as a large chessboard, but it was removed from office.

The winner of the competition that was immediately banned was James Hoban, who designed a sumptuous villa whose main theme was the oval shape of the two halls and an orderly neoclassical style, of Palladian inspiration.

The White House was inaugurated in 1800 by John Adams.
