Gildone is a town in the province of Campobasso which is about 15 minutes from the capital. It extends over a hilly area of 608m above sea level along an area of 29 sq km.
The toponym refers to the "Gildonie" (from the Germanic Gegyldan or Gyldan), brotherhoods that arose before the 19th century and were committed to helping the poor with sums of money and helping communities that had suffered fire.
The territory was first settled by the Samnites in 500 BC. of which there are still testimonies, subsequently by the Romans and between the fourth and fifth centuries by two ethnic groups: the Lombards on the Mountain where there is the Sanctuary of Santa Maria a Quadrano; the Bulgarians from Alzecone further downstream.
