Siena

The city of Siena is universally known for its huge historical, artistic and landscape heritage and for its substantial stylistic unity of medieval street furniture, as well as for the famous Palio.

Siena, a city in Tuscany, in Central Italy, stands out for its medieval brick buildings.

In 1995 its historic center was included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city is home to the Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena, founded in 1472 and therefore the oldest bank in business as well as the longest-running in the world.

Piazza del Campo, the central square with a characteristic fan shape, is home to the Palazzo Pubblico (the Gothic-style town hall) and the Torre del Mangia, a slender 14th century tower from whose white battlements you can enjoy a wonderful view.

The seventeen historic districts (the city districts) extend all around right from the square.

But Siena is not just Piazza del Campo: all around it is a succession of churches, such as the splendid San Domenico and Santa Maria dei Servi, small streets full of shops and shops where you can buy local handicraft products or taste the mythical cantucci accompanied by a glass of Vin Santo.
Between the narrow streets and the wide Piazza del Campo you can breathe the true atmosphere of Siena, a young yet very ancient city, monumental yet lively.

Siena and the Palio
The Sienese's passion for the Palio is something that transcends simple sporting competition; it is an event so closely linked to city life that it is difficult to grasp its importance for those who were not born in the Tuscan town.
The territory of the city is divided into 17 districts, of which only ten participate in the Palio race with a horse that is assigned to them by extraction. Before the Palio there is a procession (Historic Walk) in which over 600 costumed figures participate. The Palio, which consists of traveling three times around the Piazza del Campo, mounting the horse bareback (without saddle), takes place on 2 July and 16 August of each year.
