Paternò is an Italian town in the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily. Located in the eastern part of the island, more precisely in the southwestern side close to the Etna volcano, it is 18.4 km from Catania.
Presumably founded in ancient times on a site where until the second century BC. the ancient Sicilian village of Hybla Gereatis rose, in the course of its history it followed the vicissitudes of Sicily.
In 1072, it became a feudal state of count rank with the Norman count Roger I of Sicily. In the Aragonese era it was part of the Royal Chamber - except for the period in which it was again the county of the Alagona (1365-1396) - and then became a feudal domain of the Moncada family, with whom it was elevated to a principality in 1565, and of which they had the domain until 1812, with the abolition of feudalism in the Kingdom of Sicily.
