Church of Sant'Andrea is a small church located in the Flaminio district of Rome. It is also known as Church of Sant'Andrea del Vignola. Not far away, towards the bridge, there is a small church called Sant'Andrea a Ponte Milvio.
It was built on a project by Jacopo Barozzi da Vignola, in the urban stretch of the Via Flaminia between Porta del Popolo and Ponte Milvio. Pope Julius III had it built in his suburban villa (Villa Giulia) around 1553 to commemorate his escape from Rome.
During the sack of Rome by Charles V's marauders, when he was a cardinal, he was one of the hostages, probably destined for execution. He managed to escape the city on November 30, the day dedicated to the apostle Andrew, brother of Peter, from the Catholic Church, then serves as a votive church, private church and village church outside the city.
The dome and the entire church were partially restored between 1826 and 1830, with the participation of the architect Giuseppe Valradire, a writer also known for having restored the Piazza del Popolo and the Terrazza del Pincio.
A further intervention in 1977 covered the lead dome, followed in the 1990s by the restoration of the original covering of the dome with "ceramics", thus restoring its original color rendering.
