Castle Cardiff

Cardiff Castle is a major heritage attraction in Wales and a site of international significance. Situated within beautiful parks in the heart of the capital's center, Cardiff Castle's Romanesque walls and fairy-tale towers hide 2,000 years of history.

Cardiff's first Roman fort was probably founded in the late 1950s. , in a strategic site that allowed easy access to the sea. Archaeological excavations have indicated that a series of four forts, each of different sizes..

The Castle passed into the hands of numerous noble families until, in 1766, it passed by marriage to the Bute family. Castle and Bute's fortune passed to his son John, the 3rd Marquess of Bute.

Although they both died at a relatively young age, much of the work continued and many of their unfinished projects would be completed by the fourth marquis.

During the war years, from 1939 to 1945, Cardiff Castle played what is likely to be the last defensive role in its long history. With the threat of aerial bombardment by the Nazi Luftwaffe looming over the city, air-raid shelters were created within tunnels in the castle walls.

Following the death of the fourth Marquis of Bute, the family decided to give the castle and much of its park to the city of Cardiff. For 25 years, the castle has housed the National College of Music and Drama, and since 1974 it has become one of Wales' most popular tourist attractions.
