Sacred Heart Basilica

The Sacred Heart Basilica is a Catholic place of worship in Paris located on the top of the Montmartre hill, in the 18th arrondissement. Pope Benedict XV elevated it to the rank of minor basilica in 1919. Its limestone also has the characteristic of not retaining dust and smog, so after each rain the "Sacré-Cœur" is even more resplendent. The basilica is located above Montmartre (Mount of Martyrs), within the urban area of the 18th arrondissement of Paris, north of the city center.

Until 1873, the year the construction of the Sacré-Coeur began, the area was nothing more than a small village. The basilica stands on the site where Saint Dionysius was martyred in the third century by beheading. According to legend, the saint then took the severed head and traveled a few miles carrying it in his hands. The decision to build the basilica was made in the aftermath of the French defeat in the Franco-Prussian war, to give the nation the confidence and optimism necessary for a new rebirth.
