Florence's main synagogue or major Israelite temple is located in the city's historic center. Its copper-green dome is a celebrated spot in the cityscape. The synagogue was opened in 1882.
The Jewish community in Florence is very old. However, there are no definite and documented records of places of worship until the establishment of the first synagogue of the Italian rite in the ghetto (1572). However, a synagogue certainly existed at the area where Jewish families lived in the Middle Ages and early Renaissance, that is, in Oltrarno around what is now Borgo San Jacopo.
